Tour Of Freemasons’ Hall

Tour Of Freemasons’ Hall

On a freezing morning of Saturday 17th March 2018 Members of the Middlesex Light Blues Club gathered at Freemasons Hall, Great Queens Street, London for a tour of Freemasons’ Hall, Headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England, which has been the centre of English Freemasonry for over 230 years. This event was open to all Light Blues Members Club including their Families and Friends. Our guide for the tour was, again, the Museum’s Brother Enys Coggles who kept us fascinated with all the mysteries and workings that make up this classic Art Deco designed building, directing us around and feeding us with many interesting facts in his own inimitable style. Freemasons’ Hall is the third building on the site and is the meeting place for over 1,000 Masonic Lodges and as stated is the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England, the oldest Grand Lodge in the world. It was built between 1927–1932 as a memorial to the Freemasons who died in the First World War, it is one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England, and is now Grade II* listed internally and externally. The architects were H V Ashley and F Winton Newman. The interior of the building is richly decorated. In addition to the Grand Temple (seating 1,700) there are 21 Lodge Rooms, the Library & Museum of Freemasonry, Board and Committee Rooms and administrative offices. This was a fantastic tour and again very well presented by our Guide, who made it thoroughly interesting and it was enjoyed by all those who attended.  He also made one of our smaller and younger visitor’s day by getting her to push open the one and a half ton doors to the Grand Temple with one finger as well as seating her in to the Grand Master’s Chair which she found was too comfortable to leave.  On this tour our guide Bro Enys treated us all, playing a jolly piece and an excellent rendition on the Grand Temple Organ. However, if you missed out due to being unable to attend this tour because of other commitments or you were beaten by the weather another Tour will be arranged around the same time next year providing there is enough interest. Please note that bookings for this Tour, when organised, will not be taken until after the 1st January 2019.
